For 2000/month (that’s about $9), I get internet over the phone lines that works (at full bars) even a hundred feet underground on the moving metro. (Plus “phone service”, which is like an archaic way to use Google Voice over said internet connection.)

There are a few things that went right for this to work:

-I got my phone not from a contract but as a prize for being on the winning team in Google Games 2011 in New York, which meant it came unlocked.

-In America, my phone’s designed to work on T-Mobile and AT&T, which are the only two national American carriers that use the same standard as all of Europe does; the phone’dn’t’ve worked otherwise.

-The European standard is apparently technically superior to the other American one.

Going back to America is going to be a shock.
